Counselling for Anxiety and Overthinking in Potton, Bedfordshire
Understanding Anxiety & Overthinking
Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic or obvious fear. Often, it shows up as a mind that simply won't stop a persistent, exhausting loop of overthinking that leaves you feeling drained and unable to fully relax.
From the outside, you might appear to be coping perfectly well. Inside, however, you may find yourself constantly questioning your decisions, worrying about what others think, or replaying past conversations over and over in your mind.
If this feels familiar, counselling offers a supportive, non-judgemental space to explore what is driving these patterns so you can begin relating to yourself differently.
When Anxiety Takes Over, You Might Find Yourself:
-
Replaying conversations and constantly worrying that you've said the wrong thing or upset someone.
-
People-pleasing to avoid conflict, disapproval, or making others unhappy.
-
Finding it difficult to set boundaries, say no, or trust your own thoughts and feelings.
-
Being much harder on yourself than you would ever be on anyone else.
-
Expecting things to go wrong, even when everything seems to be going fine.
What May Lie Beneath the Anxiety
There isn’t always one simple reason why we become anxious or overthink. Often, these patterns develop early in life as a subconscious way of trying to keep ourselves safe, prepared, or in control.
Relational Patterns & Early Experiences
If you grew up around criticism, conflict, emotional unpredictability, or neglect, you may have learnt to closely monitor the moods of those around you.
As an adult, this can manifest as a heightened sensitivity to subtle shifts in a person's tone of voice or behavior, leading you to instantly wonder if you have done something wrong. You might find yourself trying to keep everyone happy or meticulously vetting your words to prevent a bad reaction.
Moving Beyond Labels
Some people come to counselling saying, "My childhood was fine, so I don't understand why I feel like this."
Difficult or repeated experiences don't have to look obviously traumatic from the outside to have a lasting impact on how safe you feel within yourself and your relationships. You don't need to label your experiences as "trauma" or decide if they were "bad enough" before seeking support.
Working Together on Anxiety
In our sessions, we won't simply try to force your anxious thoughts to stop. Instead, we will gently explore what tends to trigger your anxiety, how it manifests physically in your body, and how past relationships might be driving your current patterns.
My training in Somatic Trauma Therapy directly informs this work. Anxiety isn’t just an intellectual experience—it lives in the body as tension, restlessness, and a constant sense of being prepared for something to go wrong. We will explore these feelings safely, without ever pushing you to talk about anything before you are ready.
